Atlas Stool

Named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold the sky on his shoulders, the solid legs of the Atlas Stool stand strong as support for the rounded seat. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the seat is fundamental to the design, where each element exaggerates the other, giving the stool its distinctive presence and brutalist air. For Atlas, John Astbury has drawn inspiration from various influences in the history of architecture. There are references to porticoes and colonnades, but Atlas is primarily based on the archetypal post-and-lintel construction. Combined with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these primary archetypes together create the character and composition of the stool. The Atlas stool can fulfill multiple functions, as a seat or side table, and enriches a space as a standalone piece.
