Normann Copenhagen presents the Form Series
Normann Copenhagen stands out for its position as one of the leading manufacturers of design furniture with the launch of a reinterpreted range of chairs and tables that combine a strong design style with comfortable curves and an innovative industrial production technique. The name Form reflects the inspiration of the Designers through the designs of the chairs in the passage of history. With a soft silhouette that melts with a rigid Nordic wooden frame, Form is the perfect chair idea for Normann Copenhagen.
Simon Legald has been ambitious in his design of the Form and in this he has challenged the traditional type in the construction seen in a chair. The aim was to create a chair with a coherent and unified look, as well as a natural integration between the seat and the base. To accomplish this, Normann Copenhagen has developed an innovative and elegant assembly solution consisting of four molded plastic connectors, which fit perfectly to the base of the structure. This almost makes it look like the legs are growing from the seat.
Integrated and without concessions
Since the initial idea, 3 years have been taken to develop the Form series. During the process the angles have been corrected, the curves, colors and more than 20 prototypes have been adjusted with different angles and thicknesses of material have been tested in order to find the right solutions and achieve as much comfort as possible. The final result is an uncompromising design that combines craftsmanship with design history. Besides, the chair is totally unique.
The aim was also to create a flexible design that can adapt to an endless array of base types, including those that will emerge in the future. The easiest and most common way to achieve this is by making several holes below the base to adapt to the different bases. Normann Copenhagen, on the other hand, has raised the list and has prioritized exclusive and well executed details. The connection principle developed especially for the Form chair makes it possible to mount different types of bases in the same holes. As a result, the Form has a homogeneous and aesthetic design, regardless of which angle the chair is looked at.
Industry meets with crafts
La Form is a contemporary chair made of moulded plastic. The chair comes with or without arms, and as stool in two different heights. The seat is created of high quality polypropylene, and has been moulded using a single injection. That way an extremely strong construction is achieved, with the best and clearest surface. As an additional detail, the seat passes through an extra finishing phase, eliminating all visible traces of where the plastic has been injected into the mold.
The Form chair is mounted with a classic base with an exceptionally strong construction. The base is available in lacquered steel or FSC certified American oak or walnut. The powder coating used for steel legs also ensures a high-length result. The pieces for the wooden bases are treated with two layers of light varnish before they are mounted in the seat. This provides greater durability while offering a beautiful and natural surface.
Highly qualified furniture craftsmen ensure that quality is the best possible to make the wooden bases. The bases are assembled and smoothed by hand after they are cut. The steel legs are manufactured in thick and strong steel tubes. The bases are softened with the hand, making the use of screws unnecessary and the construction more durable. The way the bases are made also makes the chairs very stable, thus improving the experience of sitting. All Form are equipped with strong plastic plugs that are very suitable for most soil types.
Form seats are manufactured with the highest level of industrial specialization. This is clearly evident in the finish, matt and with the homogeneous surface with the minimum contraction marks. The wooden legs add an artisanal exclusivity and warmth to the design, while the Form chair with steel legs has a more minimalist and thin tone in appearance and tone. The furniture materials give an exclusive character that, combined with a simple and classic design language in the colors, make a unique and durable design.
Attention to detail
The moulded seat is well thought out on the curves that follow the body and ensure optimal comfort. For example, the seat is wider to accommodate various body types. It also gives you space to change place for you to feel comfortable for a longer period of time. Another important detail is the variation of the seat thickness. At 4 millimeters, the thin edge at the top of the backrest provides flexibility, while the bottom of the backrest and seat are thicker in order to increase stability and support. Finally, there is a small curve at the top of the back, precisely where it feels more natural to grab the chair and pull it out when it is under the table.
Each detail has been carefully deliberate, also when it comes to the 6 timeless color options. There is, for example, nothing random about dusty blue with gray shades or light grey, with its associations soft to minerals and cement. The green is a careful balance between the forest and the green bottle, while the deep red unites tones of the entire spectrum of summer berries. Even black and white tones are chosen so they are clean and calm in sight. A lot of effort has also been put in the coloring of the moulded connectors and steel bases, in order to match the seats perfectly.
Family Form, Original Design
The shape is fresh and at the same time sophisticated design with family and new expressions. At the same time, the series is a homage to form. Simon Legald explains the concept:
"I had an idea that the ideal chair should look like, which I have thought for many years. I wanted to unite the frame and seat in a way that had never been seen before. I have analyzed hundreds of chairs of different times during the design process. For me, the form is the essence of the design. The form is what makes a product recognizable and sets design apart from other products. The form is the first thing you see, then you enjoy the function. The form is also where a designer can place his personal seal on a furniture or a product."
The concept of Form was a graduation project by Simon Legald at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer of 2012. The project earned him the highest score. Since then, the series has expanded with a dining table in two different sizes, which is the perfect companion for Form chairs.
